Personal Health & Social Education

PHSE is concerned with the whole person and, as such, reaches across the entire curriculum and forges links beyond the school. It reinforces the foundations of our future citizens and is intended to give them a wider and deeper understanding of themselves and the society which they will steer one day.

Year 8 Young Sports Leaders work in primary schools and support KS2-3 transition and are offered the opportunity to achieve a St John’s First Aid qualification.

During year 7, the Genesis Centre provides PSHE input on sustainable development run by Project Taunton. There is also a competition which attracts entries from our students through PSHE links with the Health Service.

Our Local MP (Jeremy Browne) has been active in supporting citizenship debates within the school.

Using a local freelance photographer to show how images in the media can be manipulated fuels an interesting module of studies on body image.

Enterprise projects, which fall within the PHSE remit, include raising money for House charities and are linked with the Educational Business Partnership.

Student representatives find their voice on the County Council Youth Group and the Connexions service has recruited residential and holiday courses supporting various aspects of the syllabus.Students have taken part in the local Police project work with the Galmington “Massive” and Taunton Youth Paintballing community programmes. In connection with PHSE, students have supported the Tone School Sports Partnership's primary school central venue leagues by both officiating and coaching.

The Certificate of Personal Education is able to be used as a means of accrediting most school experiences.

Talks and visits from local community groups including Samaritans, Family Planning Centre, St Johns Ambulance, Police, Armed services. The Department has links with St Margaret’s Hospice (Euthanasia debate) which has formed part of a stimulating programme this year.

AS students who begin their KS5 studies early here at The Castle have established links with Richard Huish College
We found your personal development to be outstanding and were impressed by your highly positive attitudes, courtesy and maturity.
